I’ve Been Slacking Lately!
This post will be short, sweet, and to the point…
Alright everyone, here’s the deal. I have been slacking lately on my diet and fitness regimen. Everyone goes through this phase at some point and I am no different.
My fitness journey revitalized itself on August 13, 2012. From August 2012 through February 2013, I went from a tired, out of shape, fat, 226 pound 27 year old dad/husband to a much more fit and healthy 192 pound fitness enthusiast. I lost 34 pounds of fat and added quite a bit of muscle to my frame.
Here’s a picture of my transformation:
From March, 2013 through July, 2013 I pretty much maintained my weight, got comfortable with how I looked and then added on about 4 pounds of weight, remaining fairly steady at 196 pounds. The problem is, I gave up 3-4 days per week of HIIT cardio and started road cycling.
Road cycling for fat loss is easy, I burn anywhere from 800-2,000 calories per ride and enjoy every minute. As much as I love to get on the bike and pedal away for 20-50 miles, I have found myself doing it less as the summer has went on.
Work has gotten hectic lately and I have been quite busy traveling around my sales territory trying to close deals. (This is no excuse!)
As of today, August 12, 2013 I find myself at 199 pounds. I have promised myself that I will never be over 200 pounds again, so seeing this number on the scale creep so close to 200 lbs again, I’ve decided that I need to get off my ass and challenge myself!
So What’s my Challenge Goal, You Ask?
My goal is to get down to 185 pounds. That is 14 pounds of fat loss that I need to obtain.
I intend to try to lose approximately 1.5-2 pounds of fat every week while adding more muscle to my frame slowly. Adding muscle while losing fat is a very tricky and difficult road to walk down. In order to lose fat, I have to be in a calorie deficit. In order to gain muscle, I have to been in a calorie surplus. The fitness guru’s call this “body recomp.”
Best of all, I am going to challenge myself to do this without a gym membership. I want to challenge myself to show you guys, my fellow readers, that this can be done while traveling 2-3 nights per week for my job. I have done this before, successfully. Fitness does not have to take a back seat just because I am busy. (This challenge will be tricky and even challenging for me due to the fact that I will be traveling for work frequently. Who knows, our house is up for sale right now too, so I may even end up moving in this 8 week time frame…)
- 14-15 pounds of fat loss is probably going to take me approximately 8 weeks.
- My goal deadline will be October 7th, 2013.

What’s my Fitness Plan?
Here it is:
- Kettlebell workouts, pullups, and other body weight exercises.
- Road Cycling 3-4 days per week, averaging around 50-75 miles per week.
- Hiking and playing outdoors with my four favorite girls (my lovely wife and three daughters!)
- HIIT sprints and kettlebell intervals for fat loss!
- Body Shot app usage to track measurements, photos, and weight done weekly.
- MyFitnessPal app usage to track my food intake.
- Eating a Paleo style of diet with periodic carb refeeds utilizing only veggies (no grains) such as sweet potatoes, squash, etc…
