In the last Trip Fitness blog post, I talked about Air Travel Fitness. I discussed tips to maintain your optimal fitness level while traveling by plane.
This list of supplements is geared towards both men and women. Anyone can benefit from using the supplements below!
The Word Supplement
Definition: Something that completes or enhances something else when added to it.
Read that definition carefully. Taking supplements should COMPLETE or ENHANCE your diet when added in to the mix. Supplements do not replace your diet! If you are not eating right, tracking your food, and following a healthy lifestyle, stop reading this and start HERE. Once you have read through that blog post on food tracking and BMR/Maintenance colories, come on back and keep reading.
My biggest pet peeve is when someone thinks they can completely disregard their diet, but take some sort of fat burner, and just hope for the best.
Believe me, I have done that before… MANY TIMES!
In the past, I have tried numerous different products, from fat burning to muscle building and there is a really short list of what actually works. It is such a waste of money. Seriously, please try to have your diet in check first before going out and buying supplements.
A Brief History
Back in college, at good ole Ball State University, I liked to think of myself as an “aspriring Bodybuilder”. Reality check – I could have never been a bodybuilder, but I really wanted to be. I was never in nearly good enough shape, or low enough bodyfat. Friends and I went to the Mr. and Ms. Ball State Compeition (college bodybuilding competition) as a spectator. I read tons of books on bodybuilding and participated in all the large bodybuilding forums. I had my wife buy me Arnold’s Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding.
Most importantly (and foolishly), I mistakenly thought that these supplements could someday, help get me on stage of a bodybuilding competition. DAMN DID I WASTE A LOT OF MONEY TOO!
Don’t get me wrong, many supplements worked well for me, but it was always the ones that cost $69 and promised the world in terms of fat loss or lean muscle gains, that came up short…
In my college days, I used so many different types of supplements that I cannot even count. They all promised something different, but rarely delivered the results. The claims looked fantastic, the (photo shopped) before and after pictures made me think I could do the same. The problem was that the majority of the supplements I used, left me feeling very disappointed…
Trip Fitness Approved Supplements
Don’t let me mislead you, I still use supplements today, but my overall view on supplements has greatly changed as I have become older and wiser.
I believe in using the essential vitamins, minerals, and supplements which will help me do just what they are called, SUPPLEMENT my diet.
There are fat burners that work, there are lean muscle builders that also work, but I do not feel comfortable providing recommendations to the general public without knowing more about you and your conditions first. So if you are interested in either of those products, feel free to CONTACT ME and we can go through a consultation to discuss them further.
Complete multivitamins are a good choice for people who want to supply their body the right nutrients to maximize proper body function. The benefits of using multivitamins are:
- Improve Physical and Mental Condition
- Prevent Deficiency
- Reduce Stress
- Many Other Benefits
I use a multi vitamin called Orange Triad by a company, Controlled Labs. This product has four main benefits, Multi-Vitamin, Joint Support, Digestion Support, and Immune Support. A good multi-vitamin should be your first step in supplementation.
You can buy Orange Traid from Amazon or other supplement superstores
A cheaper, but very good alternative is the ADAM Multivitamin by Now Foods
For the ladies, I would recommend (and just bought my wife) Opti Women by Optimum Nutrition
Fish Oil is a fantastic supplement for everyday health. If you dont like the aftertaste of “fish oil burps” try to go enteric coated. The benefits of Esential Fatty Acids in Omega-3 sources are:
- Anti Cancer Effects (I am always hesitant of any cancer claims…)
- Cardiovascular (American Heart Association recommends 1g fish oil daily)
- Reduce Hypertension
- Mental Health
- Many other benefits including skin improvements…
I use Now Foods Ultra Omega 3 Fish Oil. I take 2g with breakfast and 2g with dinner.
Green Tea Extract
Green Tea has been extensively studied in people, animals, and laboratory experiments. These studdies suggest that green tea may help provide the following benefits:
- Vast Antioxidant Properties
- Cholesterol Support (lowers total cholesterol and raises HDL)
- Cancer Fighting Properties (again I am hesitant of these claims…)
- Supports Weight Loss
- Many other health benefits…
I use Now Foods Green Tea Extract or EGCg. I take three capsules per day, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
There is a product I swear by for joint and tendon support. It is called SuperCissus by USP Labs. SuperCissus uses a key ingredient called Cissus Quadrangularis. This ingredient supports healthy joints and tendon repair.
I use this product continually. It has helped me with tendon inflamation in my wrist due to ganglion cyst surgery and helps me with joint pain in my right shoulder. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FOR JOINT SUPPORT!
Whey protein is popular with active adults because it digests rapidly and is a rich source of amino acids for muscle recovery. Whey protein isolates are the purest form of whey. Typical servings provide 24 grams of rapidly-digesting whey protein with low levels of fat, lactose and other stuff you can do without.
A quality protein shake makes a fantastic meal replacement for a quick snack while on the go!
I use Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey protein powder. It comes in 10 different flavors and is one of the highest quality proteins out there. Optimum Nutrition is a company which most others base their formulas off of. I have tried other proteins in the past, but none taste better and dissolve quicker that this one.
It may appear to be pricey, around $50, but it is one of the best and highest quality protein powder available.
Researchers have found that adults taking creatine for just 2 to 3 months increased their maximum bench presses by an average of 15 pounds and their squats by 21 pounds. Australian researchers say memory and intelligence test scores improved after just 6 weeks of creatine use.
I currently do not use creatine, but I still believe in it for strength gains. Keep in mind that creatine will also cause water retention, so you will probably gain some water weight by using it. Not really a big deal…
There are a ton of different types of creatine. I still believe in the product which started the creatine revolution. CreaPure Creatine Monohydrate by ProSource. I used this product back in high school, college, and after. It is a high quality source of creatine mono.
Supplement Round Up!
Just to summarize, there are a ton of products out there that guarantee you will lose 20 pounds in three weeks, or gain 10 pounds of mucle overnight. The claims are bogus! Stick to the essential supplements for overall health and fitness and save your hard earned money.
Follow my recommendations here and you can begin down the path to a healthier lifestyle.
